The Highlander 42k features a route starting and finishing in Gstaad, beginning with a gentle warm‑up section along the Sarine before climbing 900 meters towards Höhi Wispile and its magnificent ridgelines. A descent of roughly 5 km then leads to the charming, traditional village of Lauenen.

The course then continues towards the Trütlisberg, a mountain pass at 2,041 meters, where participants should take a moment to enjoy the spectacular panoramas over the peaks separating the cantons of Bern and Valais, including the Wildhorn and the Wildstrubel.

After a long traverse beneath the Wistätthorn, runners reach the Rüwliseeli, a small alpine lake offering postcard‑worthy views of the Gummfluh, one of the region’s emblematic mountains. Following the third aid station at Zwitzeregg, the Hornberg plateau marks a more runnable transition, where participants will be able to “let loose” all the way to the final checkpoint at Horneggli.

The final section first passes through the fairytale-like Hornfluh forest before beginning a long descent towards Gstaad and a triumphant finish in its splendid main street.

A marathon distance in the form of a roller coaster.
